Interactive expedition from April 20-May 1 reveals health secrets

Overview

Why are the people on a small island in the northern Aegean Sea living such long, healthy lives? In this project, students uncover clues to longevity and help direct the research team during a live, online expedition April 20-May 1, 2009. Through email exchanges, students collaborate to solve the mystery of health and longevity and brainstorm how to implement healthier behaviors in their own lives.
Essential Questions
  1. How does diet and nutrition affect health and longevity?
  2. How does exercise and movement affect health and longevity?
  3. How do social connections affect health and longevity?
  4. How do customs and culture affect health and longevity?
Objectives
  1. Students will be able to understand concepts of health promotion and disease prevention.
  2. Students will understand that food provides energy and nutrients for healthy growth and development.
  3. Students will understand that regular exercise is important to the maintenance and improvement of good health.
  4. Students will understand the influence of family, peers, culture, technology and media on health behaviors.
  5. Students will understand the geographic and cultural complexity of Ikaria, Greece, including its language, beliefs, customs, attitudes, world views, institutions, technology and geographic components.
  6. Students will understand how the geographic and cultural complexities of Ikaria, Greece, influence and improve the health and longevity of the location.
Culminating Activity 
Students will create final digital presentations about the secrets to a long and healthy life in Ikaria, Greece, reflecting an increased understanding of the differences and commonalities between their cultures and Ikaria, Greece.
Project Elements 
This project has three parts:
  1. Engage, Activate Prior Knowledge and Build Context;
  2. Exchange of four emails with ePals; and
  3. Create digital presentations about the secrets to a long and healthy life in Ikaria, Greece
Standards 
National Health Standards
Standard 1: The student will understand concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention.
Standard 2: The student will comprehend the influence of family, peers, culture, technology and media on health behaviors.
Standard 3: The student will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks.

National Science Education Standards
Standard #F 1.1: The student will understand that regular exercise is important to the maintenance and improvement of good health.
Standard #F 1.5: The student will understand that food provides energy and nutrients for healthy growth and development.
